What Is Emergency Dentistry?

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat
Toothache or Dental Pain
Persistent or sudden tooth pain that disrupts your day or keeps you up at night.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
A fracture from biting, an accident, or impact that needs prompt attention.
Knocked-Out or Dislodged Tooth
A tooth that has been partially or fully knocked out due to trauma or injury.
Bleeding or Swollen Gums
Unusual bleeding, swelling, or tenderness in the gums that does not resolve on its own.
Lost Crown, Bridge, or Filling
A restoration that has come loose or fallen out, leaving the tooth exposed.
Swollen Face or Abscess
Facial swelling, a boil on the gums, or signs of infection that require urgent care.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Knowing how to respond in the first few minutes can make a real difference. Here are some helpful tips while you arrange to see us.
Rinse gently with warm water. Use floss to remove any trapped food. Avoid placing pain medication directly on the gum.
Handle the tooth by the crown only. If possible, place it back in the socket or keep it in milk. See a dentist as quickly as possible.
Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on that side and contact us promptly.
Keep the area clean. If you have the crown, bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that tooth until it is restored.
Rinse with warm salt water. Do not attempt to drain an abscess yourself. Call us right away, as infections can worsen quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation causing severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or trauma to the teeth or mouth. Common emergencies include a knocked-out tooth, cracked or broken tooth, severe toothache, dental abscess, lost filling or crown, or a jaw injury. If you are unsure, call us — we would rather hear from you than have you wait through pain.
Can I be seen the same day?
Yes. We reserve time in our schedule to accommodate dental emergencies the same day whenever possible. Call us as early as you can at 705-805-8048 and our team will do their best to see you promptly. For urgent situations, please let us know when you call so we can prioritize your care.
What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?
Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water without scrubbing, and try to reinsert it into the socket if possible. If you cannot, keep it moist in a container of cold milk or between your cheek and gum. Call us immediately and get to our clinic within 30 to 60 minutes — quick action gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
Is emergency dental care covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans cover emergency treatment, at least in part. We work with a wide range of insurance providers and can coordinate directly as an assignment office. We will always explain your treatment options and associated costs clearly before proceeding, so there are no surprises.
What if I have dental pain at night or on the weekend?
If you experience dental pain outside of our office hours, call our main number at 705-805-8048 for guidance. For after-hours situations, an over-the-counter pain reliever and a cold compress may provide temporary relief. If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately. Contact us first thing when we open and we will get you in as soon as possible.
How can I prevent dental emergencies?
Regular dental checkups are the best way to catch small issues before they become emergencies. Wearing a mouthguard during sports, avoiding chewing on hard objects like ice or pen caps, and addressing tooth pain early can all help prevent urgent situations. Good daily oral hygiene habits also go a long way in keeping your teeth strong and healthy.
